As its tagline suggests, West FX, Inc. promises Monsters, Makeup and Mayhem in every class.

Unlike traditional makeup schools, which focus a majority of a student’s time toward skills and knowledge needed for ‘on-set’ makeup work, West FX, Inc. teaches its students how to sculpt, mold, paint and ultimately sell masks, prosthetics and other makeup products to Halloween and Haunt industry consumers.

“I started this program because I want young makeup artists out there to know there are opportunities to hone their skills in the consumer product market,” said founder and head teacher Jeff West. The Halloween, Haunt and Horror consumer products industry is a booming market, and my students will be prepared both with their skillset, as well as market knowledge, to launch their careers in this space.”

The school features classes and seminars for any schedule, with a main 60-hour course available over a eight-day or three-week period. Weekend workshops are also available over the final week of every month and allow students to focus on one aspect of creature design in a hyper focused environment.

“I’ve always believed everyone has it in them to be an artist, and I created West FX because I saw so many people out there struggling to find educational opportunities that fit their time, needs and budgets,” West said. “My goal was to create an affordable and unique experience for my students where they can learn how to create these products, and more importantly, learn how to sell them afterward.”

West says he hopes his students will go on to start their own businesses, noting that many of the most successful vendors in the Haunted Attractions market are small businesses started out of family homes.

To help his students jumpstart that process, graduates have the option of placing their creations on display in West’s booths at various trade events nationwide.

“We’re not here to teach you makeup and just send you on your way. West FX is about giving you the tools to succeed and make a career in this industry,” West said. “Not only will you learn to design, sculpt, mold and paint a latex mask in our introductory course, for example. But you will also learn how to price, market, sell and ultimately manufacturer that mask. It’s a great opportunity to learn the business from the inside, and West FX will be here every step of the way to make sure you are successful.”

The Halloween consumer products market has been on the rise in recent years, with no signs of slowing down. The National Retail Federation over $9 Billion dollars in spending for Halloween 2017 and 2018 is expected to see another increase.
